Well, as I’ve said before, this is not a place to me to rant about the way the world is heading or try to ram ecological rhetoric down anyone’s throat. However, I am also not going to shy away from talking about the things that matter to me. I am by no means virtuous in the way I live: I have a comfortable life with all ‘mod-cons’ and I am often still seduced by the conveniences of modern life. However, I work hard to maintain a frugal, simple life and take as little from the earth as possible. Those who know me well will know that I do not always succeed in this and there are numerous areas in my life where I know I am both hypocritical and inconsistent. (It’s amazing how often people wish to point this out to you when you display any hint of moral or ethical conviction – I wonder if this is more a reflection on them than me).
But, however incoherent I may find myself sometimes, I truly believe that it is better to try and fail rather than assume that all is lost and not begin in the first place. We all have a part to play in this world and responsibility to each other. As I am about to bring a child into this world, this has never been more at the forefront of my mind and so I continue to work towards becoming more of the ‘world citizen’ I would like to be.
For me, the first step towards any improvement is knowledge. I cannot claim to be right all (or even the majority) the time or even be sure that the efforts I make are not actually more damaging however, my actions are based on research, understanding and knowledge. They say ignorance is bliss and I tend to agree but bliss is exclusively for the individual and we live in a global world. I cannot condone people acting out of thoughtlessness or lack of knowledge. I don’t expect everyone to agree with me about the way I choose live my life but I hope that if they don’t, they can explain why. Actions in life have consequence and so should be based on something real and true. Establishing your opinions and actions on ignorance is shirking your responsibly to this planet and its inhabitants.
My one request? Always try to find out more!
